Why Netflix Cancels Shows (and You Should Too)
Why Netflix Cancels Shows (and You Should Too)
A good friend of mine from the music business shared the "harsh reality" of podcasting at a local podcaster meetup I attended.
"Most podcasts should be canceled. But nobody is here to tell you that."
He said this because most podcasts never attract a significant audience. And in the real word, "zero audience" would get you canceled.
This isn't the real world though—we control when we publish our podcasts and when we decide to stop.
But his point is something to think about ...
When should you either stop doing your podcast or change things up so that you can get the audience you want?
Understanding when to stop or pivot a podcast can be crucial for success. To do this, you need to assess your podcast's performance and consider whether it aligns with your goals.
While it's true that many podcasts struggle to attract a substantial audience, this doesn't mean they should be canceled immediately—this can be a good time for podcasters to focus on improvement and adaptability. For example, if your podcast growth has plateaued and efforts to increase listenership haven’t yielded results, it might be time to reevaluate your approach and try something different.
Should you stop podcasting or change your podcast?
Ask yourself these questions:
Are you still passionate about the topic and the content you're creating?
Passion is a key driver of success in podcasting. Without it, your audience will likely sense your lack of enthusiasm.Have you identified and implemented potential areas for improvement, such as format changes, guest appearances, or marketing strategies?
Does your podcast still align with your long-term goals?
If your podcast no longer serves its intended purpose or contributes meaningfully to your objectives, it might be time to reconsider its future.
Remember, even if a significant audience for your podcast hasn’t materialized, there’s value in the process of creating and refining your message. Whether you choose to continue, pivot, or end your podcast, make sure it aligns with your vision and brings you fulfillment.
