The first thing to consider is the space where you record. Limit the “hard and flat” surfaces that will reflect sounds, such as metal or glass.
Have you ever eaten at a Chipotle? That’s the kind of environment you don’t want – stone floors, metal accents, and glass. It’s noisy as hell.
If you’re recording from home, the best place to do it may be a walk-in closet full of clothes. It’s not glamorous, but clothing does a good job of absorbing sound.
Don’t have a walk-in closet? Try a big living area with carpet, drapes, and cushy furniture.
The place to stay away from is your kitchen.
Kitchens are typically filled with hard, reflective surfaces such as countertops, appliances, and tile floors. Plus, refrigerators often create a low humming sound that can be picked up by microphones. This noise can interfere with the clarity of the recording and may prove difficult to remove during post-production.
