How to Copy a Successful Podcast (and Still Be Original)
People reach out to me for one of three reasons:
To get more listeners for a podcast.
To better spread a message via a podcast.
To make more money podcasting.
One of the most common problems I see is people copying something that has already been done.
Why would somebody listen to a copy when it’s just as easy to listen to an "original" podcast?
Don't let this happen to you. But be open to learning from other podcasts, taking what works for them, and making these things your own.
Here are some ideas about how to take the aspects of a podcast you like and make them work for you and your podcast, without coming off like a cheap knockoff.
1. Identify the Core Elements
Determine the specific elements of the podcast you admire, such as the format, storytelling style, or guest interactions. Understanding these core aspects allows you to incorporate similar techniques while still creating unique content that reflects your voice and perspective.
2. Inject Your Personality
Infuse your podcast with your personality quirks, humor, and opinions. This personal touch will differentiate your podcast from others and help build a connection with listeners, making them feel like they know you personally.
3. Add Unique (and Personal) Segments
Create original segments that cater to your interests or expertise. Whether it's a quirky Q&A session, a minute of rapid-fire questions, or a unique take on current events, these segments can become signature parts of your podcast.
4. Focus on Niche Topics
Even if you admire a podcast with a broad theme, delve deeper into niche topics within that area. Offering specialized knowledge or insights can attract an audience looking for detailed content that isn't widely covered elsewhere.
5. Innovative Storytelling Techniques
Experiment with different storytelling methods such as narrative-driven episodes, soundscapes, or integrating multimedia elements. This creative approach can set your podcast apart and keep listeners engaged.
6. Engage with Your Audience
Build a community by actively engaging with listeners through social media, live Q&A sessions, or listener-submitted content. Encouraging interaction can foster loyalty and make your podcast feel more personal.
7. Collaborate with Diverse Guests
Invite guests from varied backgrounds to bring fresh perspectives and insights. Even if your format is similar to others, the unique experiences and stories of your guests will set your episodes apart.
8. Leverage Unique Marketing Strategies
Promote your podcast using creative marketing strategies such as themed merchandise, exclusive bonus content, or interactive social media challenges. Innovative marketing can attract new listeners and create buzz around your podcast.
9. Consistent Branding
Develop a consistent branding strategy that encompasses visuals, tone, and messaging across all platforms. A strong brand identity helps distinguish your podcast in a crowded market and builds recognition.
10. Evolve Continuously
Stay open to changing your content based on feedback and trends in the industry. Constantly refining and refreshing your podcast ensures it remains relevant and engaging for both new and loyal listeners.
Everything we do in podcasting is built upon something that already exists. But the “big success” in podcasting comes from innovation, not straight imitation.
By understanding what you admire in other podcasts and blending those elements with your unique voice and ideas, you can create something truly unique.
Keep experimenting, engaging, and evolving. You'll find your place in the podcasting world.
