A Middle-Aged White Guy Gives You "Representation" Advice
It's a new world. People are more open to diverse opinions than ever before.
“Monoculture” is sneaky. And it’s so common that it may show up in what you create without you even realizing it.
What this looks like …
When writing my Big Podcast book, which is a little embarrassing to think about now, the majority of examples I used, as well as all the pronouns, were male. This was so common in business books that the four women I had working with me on edits missed it entirely.
But the fifth woman noticed it and mentioned it to me, so I changed it.
To be fair, when I started that project, most podcasters were male. But even in a situation like that, it doesn't mean you can't be forward-thinking and see where things are headed. It also doesn't give you an excuse not to change what you're doing once you know differently.
Today, I focus on creating for the world that I want to see (and live in), not the world as it is at the moment. I do this with everything I create—my podcast, the books and articles I write, and social media.
If you want a bigger, more diverse audience, I advise you to do the same thing. People want to see themselves in the content they consume.
