1000 True Fans? Try 100
In 2008, WIRED editor Kevin Kelly wrote that creators only needed "1000 True Fans" (at $100 per fan, per year) to make a good living.
In my Big Podcast book, I talk about how you can actually make a great living as a podcaster with only 5-10 decision-makers on your side.
Way too many podcasters are focusing on a "big audience" to make things happen for themselves. And while it's nice to have millions of downloads, you need to know that there are other options for making money via your podcasting.
You don't need a big audience, you need the right audience.
Finding the "right" audience means identifying and connecting with those who truly resonate with your podcast and will support what you do. These individuals are not just passive listeners but active participants who value what you offer and are prepared to invest in it, whether through financial contributions, engagement, or advocacy.
The right audience understands the unique value you bring and shares your podcast with others. It’s composed of loyal, engaged members who are decision-makers or influencers within their circles, ensuring that their support translates into tangible benefits for your podcast.
Quality over quantity can be far more lucrative and fulfilling than chasing after sheer numbers.
